DIY Measures

Draughtproofing

There are lots of things you can do to reduce draughts in your home with a little time and know-how.

Draughtproofing is a simple DIY measure that costs around £90 and can save you £20 and 155kg of CO2 per year, if you didn't want to get professional installers in.

Green homes Concierge can help you with tips and hints to successfully find the right materials and suppliers to insulate your doors and windows.

Low Energy Lighting

Most low energy light bulbs come in the form of CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Lamps). They are a modern type of light bulb that will fit into a standard light fitting, usually a bayonet fitting in the UK, but

CFLs are also available with Edison screw fittings.

Low energy light bulbs are essentially fluorescent tubes bent into a shape to fit into an ordinary light fitting. They use around a quarter to a fifth of the electricity used by an ordinary light bulb. Although they cost a little more, this is outweighed by the fact they last for many years.

This means that they save you time and trouble in not having to replace bulbs every few months, not to mention reducing your electricity bill.

Chimneys

If you no longer use your chimney for a fire, it can waste a surprising amount of energy, as heat will rise through the chimney, and cold draughts can come out from the bottom.

There are four basic ways of closing off chimneys; permanently blocking them with bricks or a concrete seal; temporarily closing them near the bottom with a chimney balloon; temporarily capping them at the top; placing a temporary shield in front of the fireplace

This could potentially be done as a DIY measure - as a Green Homes Concierge customer, we can help you source and give guidance on installing the product.
