Reducing Carbon Emissions

What is a Carbon Footprint?

Our ‘carbon footprint' is a neat way of expressing the detrimental effect we're having upon the environment through our CO2 emissions.

What are the main sources of CO2 emissions in your home?

There are five ways in which we use energy in our homes. Typically, heating, hot water and lighting account for 85% of the energy we consume. 15% is used for cooking and appliances.

What kind of buildings produce the most emissions?

Green Homes Concierge is particularly focusing on large properties in London that were built before 1950, because these typically have the largest carbon footprint. Homes with poor insulation and many and especially older electrical appliances are also larger contributors.

17,000 tonnes of CO2 doesn't sound very much. Why isn't the target higher?

Actually 17,000 is quite a lot of tonnes. For instance, it would fill the Albert Hall 94 times over.  And while it is our target for the next three years, we very much hope to exceed it.

What's more, homeowners who join us now will continue to make extra savings in years to come.  The benefit will be a cumulative one.

Judging by our initial pilot scheme, it's a realistic figure and one that is achievable by focusing, for a start, on large pre-1950 houses in London.

Is this initiative linked to HIPs?

When you sell your house, you're now legally obliged to include an energy performance certificate, provided by a qualified assessor. This is something we're able to supply, once we've assessed your home.

How can people on low incomes afford to be green?

Over the last three years, average energy costs have increased by 60% for electricity and nearly 100% for gas. So by cutting your use of energy, you could slash your fuel bills.

Energy-saving changes to your home are bound to involve an initial outlay. But you could benefit from immediate savings through the buying power of Green Homes Concierge.

We will also establish whether you are eligible for a grant. Why not check out the Energy Saving Trust at energysavingtrust.org.uk for some great offers and government grants to help you ‘do your bit'?
